Es ist schon ungewöhnlich: Ausgerechnet ein Duo aus dem Eurovisions-Niemandsland Kuba will die Schweiz am ESC 2015 in Wien vertreten. Wieso, weshalb, warum − das wollte douzepoints.ch von Bjoyce und David Casas (BJ/DC) und IV. Rock, der Vocal-Sängerin, wissen. Ein Interview über Eurovision in Kuba, die Motivation, die Schweiz zu repräsentieren, und ihre Inspiration für Musik.

Erzählt uns etwas über BJ/DC …

BJ/DC besteht aus dem DJ- und Producer-Duo BJoyce und David Casas. Unsere Produktionen beinhalten verschiedene Richtungen von elektronischer Musik. Wir arbeiten seit 2012 zusammen.

Wie können wir euer Leben in Kuba vorstellen? Könnt ihr den ESC auch bei euch sehen?

IV. Rock: Unser Leben ist bescheiden, wie ihr euch vorstellen könnt. Und manchmal auch ein wenig verrückt. Wir versuchen, in Kontakt mit der Welt zu bleiben und neue Räume für elektronische Musik in der kulturellen Szene von Kuba zu schaffen.

BJoyce: Den Eurovision Song Contest können wir in Kuba nicht sehen, wir haben nur 4 nationale Fernsehstationen und Internetzugang ist immer noch sehr limitiert. Nur wenige Leute haben einen Anschluss zuhause und es ist ziemlich teuer, deshalb müssen wir improvisieren. Es gibt zwar öffentliche Zugänge, um online zu gehen, aber es gibt immer viele Leute dort. Internationale Fernsehsender gibt es nur in den Hotels. Wir vermuten, dass einige Sender (z. B. französische oder italienische) den ESC übertragen.

Wie habt ihr vernommen, dass die Schweiz über das Internet Songs für den Eurovision Song Contest sucht?

Wir erfuhren das über ein paar Freunde, wovon einer Schweizer und der andere Deutscher ist. Sie arbeiten in Kuba und erzählten uns von dem Anlass. So entstand die Idee, dass wir vielleicht mitmachen könnten und wir informierten uns. Unsere Freunde zeigten uns auch die Videos der ESC-Finale von 2010 und 2012.

Wie denkt ihr über die Schweiz und habt ihr das Land jemals besucht?

IV. Rock: Ich weiss nicht so viel über das Land. Nur, was mir Freunde erzählt haben, die dort leben. Die Natur muss wundervoll sein, das Leben entspannt, alles funktioniert … und die Schokolade!

BJoyce: Es ist ein Land mit grosser Tradition und vielen Werten, aber auch offen für Kultur von ausserhalb. Alleine, dass die Schweiz ausländischen Musikern erlaubt, sie am Eurovision Song Contest zu vertreten, zeigt, dass sie grossen Appetit auf neue Talente haben. Wir haben auch gehört, dass Celine Dion aus Kanada 1988 die Schweiz repräsentiert hat. Besucht haben wir die Schweiz nie, würden aber gerne.

Was ist eure Motivation, die Schweiz zu vertreten?

Wir sind begeistert und überrascht von der Grösse des Anlasses. Die Menge der Fans kann mit einer Fussballweltmeisterschaft verglichen werden. Und die Idee, ein Land wie die Schweiz zu vertreten, ist grossartig. Nur gehts hier nicht um Sport sondern um Songs, die echte Knüller sein müssen. Und ganz ehrlich, für uns wäre es sehr spannend und neu, Aufmerksamkeit zu erhalten, indem Kuba die Schweiz repräsentiert.

Was ist eure Verbindung zum Eurovision Song Contest? Wart ihr je live vor Ort?

Wir möchten an der Selektion 2015 mit unseren beiden Songs «Jah» und «One Pikes» teilnehmen. In Kuba können wir diesen Grossanlass kaum mitverfolgen – so waren wir weder live dabei noch live vor Ort. Nur zwei DVDs von letztjährigen Song Contests haben wir gesehen.

Was denkt ihr über Conchita Wurst?

Sie schaut aus wie Johny Depp in «Pirates oft the Caribbean»

Eurovision ist dafür bekannt, dass viele Schwule den Anlass mitverfolgen. Warum denkt ihr, dass das so ist? Und wie würdet ihr euch unter so vielen Schwulen fühlen?

Wir wussten nicht, dass so viele Schwule den ESC mögen. Das ist interessant. Schwule sind ein super Publikum, die eine gute Atmosphäre kreieren. Es sollte keine Tabus geben. Denn das Wichtigste für uns ist es, allen Menschen unsere Beats rüberzubringen – unabhängig von Geschlecht und sexuellen Präferenzen. Musik ist das Herz des Lebens.

Sagt uns etwas über eure Songs «Jah» und «One Pikes»: Wo haben sie ihre Inspiration? Handelt es sich eurer Meinung nach um typische Eurovision-Songs?

BJoyce: Unser erster Song «Jah» ist ein Track in progressivem House mit gesanglichen Elementen. Der Song ist für uns fantastisch und eine Hymne auf positive Energie. «Jah» steht für alles Positive im Leben – Gewinn, Risiko, Optimismus, Hoffnung … alles, was inspiriert. Auch den zweiten Song «One Pikes» finden wir grossartig. Er lädt zum Tanzen ein und gleichzeitig zum Geniessen des Gesangs – ein einmaliges Erlebnis auf der Tanzfläche … yayyyyy.

David Casas, IV. Rock: Einige schätzen es wohl nicht als typischen Eurovision-Song ein, bei dem üblicherweise der Gesang im Vordergrund steht. Aber wir sahen Loreen, die Gewinnerin 2012 mit «Euphoria». Der Song war auch elektronische Musik. Damit wissen wir, dass wir mit diesem Genre nicht alleine im Wettbewerb sind.

Wie denkt ihr über die anderen teilnehmenden Songs? Wieso sollte euer Song gewinnen? Und warum sollten wir für ihn stimmen?

Es gibt verschiedene Genre und Stile. Viele Songs sind sehr gut produziert und mit viel Herzblut gemacht. Wir denken, dass unsere Songs in dieses Umfeld passen und die Herausforderung aufnehmen dürfen. Sie sind echt, voller Freude und Energie, sie sind einfach «Jah»!

Tell us about BJ/DC…

BJ/DC is formed by the DJ and Producers Duo BJoyce and David Casas. Our productions include different genres and subgenres of electronic music. We started with our cooperation in 2012.

How can we imagine your life in Cuba? Can you see the ESC also in your country?

IV. Rock: Our life is simple, as you can imagine, and sometimes also a little bit crazy, but we are trying to stay connected with the world and defend and create new spaces for electronic music in the Cuban cultural scene.

BJoyce: We cannot see the ESC in our country, we have only 4 national TV-Channels and the internet is still very limited (few people do have access at home and it is quite expensive, so we have to “improvise” … There are some public centers where you can go on line, but always many people…). Only in the hotels exist international TV-channels. We suppose that some of them (e.g. from France or Italy) will show the ESC…

How did you hear about Switzerland searching for it’s Eurovision Song, by the internet?

David Casas: We know across a couple of friends of whom one is Swiss and the other German … they work in Cuba and told us about the event and from there emerged the idea that, maybe, we can participate. So we started to look for more information. Our friends also showed us the videos from the ESC finals 2010 and 2012.

What do you think about Switzerland and have you ever visited?

IV. Rock: I do not know so much about the country, only what some friends, who live there, tell me. The nature must be beautiful, the life relaxed, everything works… and the chocolate …  

BJoyce: Its a country with a lot of tradition and values, but also very open for international culture, because nothing but the simple fact that Switzerland allows foreign musicians to participate in the competition to represent Switzerland in the ESC shows that they have a big appetite for discovering hidden talents … We have also heard that Celine Dion from Canada represented Switzerland in 1988. But we never visited Switzerland (would very much like to).

What is your motivation to represent Switzerland?

We are thrilled and surprised by the magnitude of the event (all the fans, it can be compared with to the football world-cup!) and the idea to represent a country like Switzerland. But this time it is not sports, it’s all about the songs, that have the scoop! And honestly, for us it would naturally be very exciting and a very different way to get attention, coming from Cuba and representing Switzerland.

What is your link to the Eurovision Song contest? Can you see it in Cuba? Have you ever been there live?

We want to participate in the competition with our tracks “Jah” and “One Pikes”. In Cuba you can´t see  this big event. And we never have seen it or been there live,  just across 2 DVDs from past competitions.

What do you think about Conchita Wurst?

She looks like Johnny Depp in “Pirates of the Caribbean” …

Eurovision is known to be very gay. Why do you think it’s like that? And how would you feel to be among so many gays?

We did not know that so many gays like the ESC. That’s interesting. Gays are a very good audience, who create a good atmosphere and there should be no taboo. The most important thing for us is to transmit to all the people our beats, regardless of genders and sexual preferences, music is the heart of life.

Tell us about your songs. Where are they inspired? Are they typical songs for Eurovision in your opinion?

BJoyce: Our 1^st song is “Jah”, a track with Progressive House beats and with vocal elements. For us it is fantastic and a hymn to the positive energy “Jah” means
everything positive in life, to win, to risk, optimism, hope … anything that inspires … The 2nd one is ONE PIKES, another great song in our opinion, the beats invites you to dance and you can enjoy the voice at the same time – a great dance floor experience … yayyyyy

David Casas, IV. Rock: Maybe some do not consider it  exactly as a typical song to participate in this event, where usually song lyrics are very important … but we have seen Loreen, the winner of 2012 with Euphoria, which was also electronic music and we know that we are not alone in the competition with this genre …

What do you think about the other songs on Eurovision Song Contest? Why your song will win? Why we should vote for it?

There is a big variety of genres and styles, and many songs are produced very well with lots of passion. We think that our songs fit well in this environment and they are a challenge, because they are genuine, full of joy and full of energy, they are “Jah”.

What are your goals in life?

Right now our goal is to push “Jah” and “One Pikes”!
